‘Carnival’ is the Fuchsia of the Week 08/2015.

Due to its name this Fuchsia is fitting for this week, though carnival is celebrated along it,

depending on the region or country one lives in. The breeder is the late Horace Tiret (1915-2012) from the USA, who was, by profession, a hired accountant and not a gardener, living in the San Francisco bay area. Obviously he was quite productive at his hobby, introducing more than 125 hybrids between 1947 and 1972.

In his opinion the results of crossbreeding were more determined  by chance than by knowledge, but beside that he had a sound idea of the Mendel´s genetics and did at last monitor each new hybrid 5 years prior to introducing it. First, without an own garden, he worked together closely with other breeders from the USA like Reiter, Schnabel and Niederholzer, but later filled his own one to capacity with fuchsias.

The mother plant of “Carnival”, registered 1956 with the American Fuchsia Society, is supposed to be the well known hybrid “Citation”, but this one does look quite different at first sight, the father lineage is not known (any more?). Striking are the snow-white sepals, regularly curling up and therefore exposing deep red, tight packed corollas. But, beside nice colors, the breeder aimed for a lush growth. “Carnival” grows as a hanging plant and is therefore best suited in a hanging basket. Being very robust i am not surprised that this hybrid is for sale in quite a large number of fuchsia-nurserys despite its age. And, hopefully, this shall be so within future!
